Telegram auto-reply: why a 30-second answer costs 23 minutes

Gloria Mark, professor of informatics at the University of California, Irvine, measured how long it takes a person to return to an interrupted task. The answer was 23 minutes and 15 seconds. And they do not return straight away: before that they manage to dip into roughly two other tasks.

For scale: the average time a person spends on a single screen without switching fell from 2.5 minutes in 2004 to 47 seconds by 2023. Concentrating is already harder than it has ever been.

Why you cannot answer fast and work at the same time

An adult under 45 sends and receives more than 85 messages a day. And 82% of the people writing expect an answer within ten minutes — in a messenger, patience is measured in minutes rather than the hours email allows. Meanwhile every reply, as we saw above, costs you half an hour of lost focus.

Those two demands are physically incompatible, and discipline does not bridge them. Whatever you choose, you lose:

• Answer immediately — and lose the day to switching.
• Answer in a batch in the evening — and people fill the silence in ways that do not favour you.
• Do not answer at all — and the relationship suffers.
